With top-rated FRANKEL (GB) [136] preparing for his 2012 debut, crack Australian sprinter BLACK CAVIAR (AUS) [130] has carried on where she left off in 2011 with three victories so far since the turn of the year. The highest-rated horse trained in the southern hemisphere for more than a year, it is an indication of her tremendous talent that she has not needed to reproduce her top rating to capture any of those three races.
Still unbeaten after 19 starts, Black Caviar won the Essendon Mazda Australia Stakes (G2) over 1200m in January by four and a quarter lengths and followed up with a smooth three and a quarter length success in the Sportingbet C.F. Orr Stakes (G1), her first attempt at 1400m. The mighty mare then confirmed her versatility and put up her best performance in the period under review when returning to 1000m to take the Coolmore Lightning Stakes (G1) a week later by a length and three quarters from HAY LIST (AUS) [125].
Having battled bravely against the odds to concede 2kg to Black Caviar in the Lightning, Hay List gained richly deserved compensation on his next outing when narrowly defeating BUFFERING (AUS) [116] in the Lexus Newmarket Handicap (G1), putting up a career best performance in the process. In so doing, he followed in the hoof prints of Black Caviar, who established her highest rating to date when capturing the 2011 renewal of the Newmarket by three lengths.
Apart from Black Caviar, the top rated performance of 2012 so far has been put up by MONTEROSSO (GB) [126], who bounded clear to take the Emirates Dubai World Cup (G1) on the Tapeta at Meydan. Another to establish a career best display, Monterosso had a comfortable three lengths to spare over Al Maktoum Challenge Round 3 (G1) winner CAPPONI (IRE) [121], with PLANTEUR (IRE) [120] in third.
Also on the same surface, KRYPTON FACTOR (GB) [124] followed up his convincing success in the Mahab Al Shimaal (G3) with a two and a quarter length victory over 2011 winner ROCKET MAN (AUS) [122] in the Gulf News Dubai Golden Shaheen (G1). There was another dominant display on the Meydan Tapeta when AFRICAN STORY (GB) [120] burst clear for a four length victory in the GODOLPHIN MILE (G2), following up his decisive success by the same margin over the same course and distance three weeks earlier in the Burj Nahaar (G3).
On the turf at Meydan, CITYSCAPE (GB) [125] put up a spectacular performance to capture the Dubai Duty Free Stakes (G1) by four and a quarter lengths from MUTAHADEE (IRE) [116], while CIRRUS DES AIGLES (FR) [128] held off ST NICHOLAS ABBEY (IRE) [124] by a neck in the Longines Dubai Sheema Classic (G1).
Elsewhere, AMBITIOUS DRAGON (NZ) [122] reproduced his best form of 2011 to capture the Stewards’ Cup (HK G1) over 1600m and the Citibank Hong Kong Gold Cup (HK G1) over 2000m, on both occasions defeating XTENSION (IRE) [118] at Sha Tin, while FOXWEDGE (AUS) [122] achieved the same rating when upsetting Hay List in the Power Tracker William Reid Stakes (G1) at Moonee Valley.
In the United States, NATES MINESHAFT (USA) [120] showed further improvement to crush his rivals by over seven lengths in the New Orleans Handicap (G2) at the Fair Grounds, while TO THE GLORY (JPN) [120] achieved the highest rating in Japan so far this year when scoring a length and a quarter success in the Nikkei Shinshun Hai (G2) at Kyoto.
