The LONGINES World's Best Racehorse Rankings (for 3yos and upwards which raced between 1st December 2012 and 9th June 2013)

The official listing of the world's best racehorses

(covering the period 1st Dec to 9th June 2013)

The recently retired Australian wonder mare BLACK CAVIAR (AUS) (130) retains her status as top racehorse in the world in the Longines World's Best Racehorse Rankings just ahead of the crack American gelding WISE DAN (USA) (129) who recently extended his Group 1 winning sequence to five in the Woodford Reserve Turf Classic (G1) at Churchill Downs. These extra ordinary racehorses have set a formidable target for the emerging 'Classic' generation of racehorses now appearing in the Northern Hemisphere.

The best performance by a three year old to date in Europe was by the Irish trained colt (and European champion juvenile of 2012) DAWN APPROACH (IRE)(125) who stormed to victory in the Qipco 2000 Guineas (G1) at Newmarket . He is closely followed by another Irish trained colt in MAGICIAN(IRE)(122) who improved considerably on previous form to win the Tattersall's Irish 2000 Guineas (G1) at the Curragh and the promised clash between these two milers at Royal Ascot is a prospect to savour.

Among the staying classic division , there have been a number of promising performances. The Irish trained colt RULER OF THE WORLD (IRE)(120) won the Investec Derby (G1) on only his third racecourse start while the French trained colt INTELLO (GER)(120) atoned for an unlucky defeat in the Poule d'Essai des Poulains (G1) when winning the Prix du Jockey Club (G1) at Chantilly. Equally promising at this juncture is the Japanese three year old colt KIZUNA (JPN) (119) who won the Tokyo Yoshun (Japanese Derby ) recently.

In North America meanwhile , the Triple Crown provided three different winners with ORB (USA)(121) , the winner of the Kentucky Derby (Presented by Yum ! Brands ) (G1) regarded as marginally better at this juncture than the two colts who defeated him subsequently , namely , the Preakness (G1) victor - OXBOW (USA)(119) and the Belmont (G1) winner - PALACE MALICE (USA)(119)

In Asia , two Hong Kong trained horses both achieved career best performances at Kranji racecourse in Singapore . MILITARY ATTACK (IRE)(124) who had previously annexed the Audemars Piguet QE 11 Cup (G1) at Sha Tin, was even more impressive in cantering home in the Singapore Airlines International Cup (G1) while compatriot LUCKY NINE (IRE)(120) comfortably landed the KrisFlyer International Sprint (G1).

South African sprinter WHAT A WINTER (SAF)(120) retained his status as South Africa's best domestic sprinter when winning the Betxchange Computaform Sprint (G1) while top Japanese sprinter LORD KANALOA (120) showed an impressive versatility when going up in distance to win the Yasuda Kinen (G1) at Tokyo racecourse.
