Publication "Handicapping Guide"

A useful handicapping guide was published by New Zealand Thoroughbred Racing (NZTR. The guide gives everyone an understanding of the way performances are assessed by the handicappers and the various factors which are taken into account, or not taken into account, in arriving at a revised rating after any race performance.

The guide is relevant, also because New Zealand was one of the first racing jurisdictions in the world to introduce a Ratings Based Handicapping (RBH) system (numerical rating used to determine the weights in handicap races).

New Zealand also has a ratings-based race programming system. This means that eligibility for certain races is determined by a horse’s rating.

The Handicapping Guide is available to be downloaded from the NZTR website
