China launches campaign against illegal betting

The Chinese government has announced new plans to fight organised gambling. These plans are part of the wider battle against corruption, of which gambling is considered to play a part.

The organisation of gambling activities is forbidden in China, and those who violate this law risk emprisonment. Nevertheless, press reports claim that an increasing amount of gambling is being offered illegally, among which the betting on horseracing.

Part of the anti-gambling strategy is the opening-up of telephone hotlines, which would enable mainlanders to tip-off unauthorised gambling activities. Those callers who provide useful information will receive an award. Another element of the plan is the instruction to law-enforcement agents to prevent the organisation of gambling tours to places like Hong Kong, Macau or North Korea.
