The LONGINES World's Best Racehorse Rankings (for 3yos and upwards which raced between 1st January 2016 and 10th July 2016) | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
After winning the Mohegan Sun Metropolitan Handicap (G1) by 14 1/4 lengths, FROSTED (USA) [126] finds himself as the co-second highest rated horse in the world and features as the biggest mover in the fifth edition of the LONGINES World's Best Racehorse Rankings for 2016.
Frosted, who spent most of last year running against eventual 2015 Longines World's Best Racehorse American Pharoah, began his 2016 campaign in the United Arab Emirates before returning to the United States. He originally was rated at 120 after he won the Al Maktoum Challenge Round 2 Sponsored by EGA (G2) by an easy five lengths this February. The Met Mile was his first start since finishing fifth behind CALIFORNIA CHROME (USA) [126] in the Dubai World Cup Sponsored by Emirates Airline (G1). As is to be expected, a number of horses feature in this edition of the rankings after their performances at Royal Ascot. Leading the way is GALILEO GOLD (GB) [123], who improved his rating from 120 to 123 after winning the St James's Palace Stakes (G1) over THE GHURKA (IRE) [120]. Earlier in the season he won the QIPCO 2000 Guineas (G1) before finishing second behind AWTAAD (IRE) [120] in the Tattersalls Irish 2,000 Guineas (G1). MY DREAM BOAT (IRE) [122] is ranked after his victory in the Prince of Wales's Stakes (G1), and stayer ORDER OF ST GEORGE (IRE) [120] added another top class victory to his list of accomplishments with his three length win in the Gold Cup In Honour of The Queen's 90th Birthday (G1). Additionally, HAWKBILL (USA) [121] won the Tercentenary Stakes (G3) at Royal Ascot before going on to win the Coral-Eclipse (G1) against his elders at Sandown. HARZAND (IRE) [123] remains undefeated in 2016 after his half-length victory over IDAHO (IRE) [120] in the Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby (G1). Earlier in June, he beat US ARMY RANGER (IRE) [120] in the Investec Derby (G1) and is one of 18 horses to complete the Epsom Derby/Irish Derby double. Representing the sprinters is LIMATO (IRE) [120], who posted a two length win in the Darley July Cup (G1) in his second start of the year. Meanwhile, 2014 Emirates Melbourne Cup (G1) hero PROTECTIONIST (GER) [120] made his return to his homeland a victorious one with a 3 ¼ length score in the Grosser Hansa-Preis (G2), and MELATONIN (USA) [120] proved his upset victory in the Santa Anita Handicap (G1) this March was no fluke as he took the Gold Cup at Santa Anita Stakes (G1).
