British jockey Ryan Moore was honoured as the inaugural recipient of the Longines World’s Best Jockey Award during a ceremony at the gala dinner of the Longines Hong Kong International Races, held 12 December 2014 at the Hong Kong Convention & Exhibition Centre.
The awarding of the Longines World’s Best Jockey Award is based upon performances in the 100 highest-rated Group 1 and Grade 1 races as established for the year by the Longines World’s Best Racehorse Rankings Committee. The scoring incorporates races from 1 December of the previous year until 30 November of the current year. Jockeys accrue 12 points for a win, 6 points for placing second, and 4 points for placing third.
For the 2013-2014 season, Mr Moore won 5 of the referenced highest-rated Group 1 and Grade 1 races for the year, finished 2nd three times, and finished 3rd four times, accumulating an overall total of 94 points. The title of Longines World’s Best Jockey crowns a remarkable year for Mr Moore, which in 2014 has seen him victorious in 15 Group 1 or Grade 1 races across 7 different countries.
Longines Vice President and Head of International Marketing Juan-Carlos Capelli and Chief Executive Officer of the Hong Kong Jockey Club and IFHA Vice-Chairman Winfried Engelbrecht-Bresges presented the award to Mr Moore.
“Longines is very proud to pay tribute to the incredible athletes that lead horses to accomplish their feats: the jockeys,” said Mr Capelli. “The Longines World’s Best Jockey Award aims to recognize the accomplishments of the most skilled jockeys in the 100 highest-rated Group 1 races all around the world as established by international handicappers.”
“Great jockeys combine a number of attributes including balance, a sense of pace, instinct, strategy, intelligence, courage, and a hunger to win,” said Mr Engelbrecht-Bresges. “There can be no doubt that the recipient of the inaugural Longines World’s Best Jockey Award, Ryan Moore, has all of these attributes.”
Christophe Soumillon finished in 2nd place with 88 points, Joseph O’Brien finished in 3rd place with 72 points, James Doyle finished in 4th place with 70 points, Zac Purton finished in 5th place with 58 points, Damien Oliver finished in 6th place with 48 points, John Velazquez and Richard Hughes finished in joint 7th place with 46 points, while jockeys Joel Rosario, Michael Rodd, Tommy Berry, and William Buick tied for 10th place with 42 points.
