Ryan Moore To Receive First Longines World’s Best Jockey Award | |
Following the Japan Cup in Association with Longines at Tokyo Racecourse in Japan, British jockey Ryan Moore clinched the title of Longines World’s Best Jockey over Belgian jockey Christophe Soumillon. Despite Soumillon’s stunning victory in the celebrated Japanese race aboard Epiphaneia (JPN), Moore’s earlier successes in the world’s top 100 Group 1 and Grade 1 races secured the prestigious award of Longines World’s Best Jockey. Moore was a consistent presence during the entire season, remarkably winning 5 of the top 100 Group 1 or Grade 1 races (the Dubai Duty Sheema Classic presented by Longines, the Prix du Jockey Club, the Qipco Irish Champion Stakes, the Sportingbet Cox Plate, and the Emirates Melbourne Cup), while finishing 2nd three times, and finishing 3rd four times. He finished the competition with 94 points, while Soumillon finished 2nd with 88 points. Irish jockey Joseph O’Brien finished in 3rd place with 72 points. The full and final standings can be found at ifhaonline.org. Moore will be recognized at a ceremony held during the gala dinner of the Longines Hong Kong International Races, 12 December 2014 at the Hong Kong Convention & Exhibition Centre. The awarding of the Longines World’s Best Jockey is based upon performances in the 100 highest-rated Group 1 and Grade 1 races as established for the year by the Longines World’s Best Racehorse Rankings Committee. The scoring incorporates races from 1 December of the previous year until 30 November of the current year. Jockeys accrue 12 points for a win, 6 points for placing second, and 4 points for placing third. This system and the presentation of the Longines World’s Best Jockey Award mark the first time that a jockey will be quantitatively recognized as the best among his or her global peers.
