Australian bookmakers push for levy change

The increase of online, inter-state wagering by bookmakers on horseracing has led to a dispute with bookmakers about the basis at which they should make a contribution to racing.

Various states have introduced legislation to ensure that online operators pay a contribution to the racing sector for using their product. The basis for this contribution has been in the state of Victoria a 1%, and New South Wales, 1,5% on total turnover on the races for which the race fields information was used.

Victoria has changed its levy basis and now charges bookmakers 10% on their gross profits. Bookmakers, who favour this basis of contribution, now push for New South Wales to follow the example of Victoria. However, Racing NSW said it would not do so as it would force it to partner with corporate bookmakers.
